John Spencer
John Spencer is a watercolour painter working between Aberdeenshire and the Isle of Skye, and the two places pull his work in different directions: the quiet inland glens and river valleys of the north east, and the harder coastal edges of the west. Where much landscape watercolour softens everything, Spencer pays close attention to the ground itself. Rock strata, dry stone dykes, the line of a track, the stones on a riverbed: these are drawn rather than suggested, and set against loose washes of sky and distant hill.
